ERDF Opened Skill Centre at Central Jail, Gauhati

University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya (USTM)
has launched the Skill Development Centre for Jail inmates on October 22, 2016
at the Central Jail, Guwahati in association with Nagen Sarma Memorial Society.
This is a extensive initiative under the USTM Community College with a focus on
Social Inclusiveness sponsored by ERD Foundation, Guwahati.
This training centre is an idea with the aim to re-establish the concept that
the jail should ideally be the place for reform. The inmates after being
released need to live a life of dignity following the words of Gandhiji, ‘hate
the sin and not the sinner”. To facilitate them to live a life without any
social stigma, the released prisoners need to be economically productive. With
this in mind and based on the experience of Nagen Sarma Memorial Society in
“Gandhi Vichar Prachar”, USTM launches “Skill Development Centre” for jail
inmates in Gauhati Central Jail with two training centres, the Computer Training
and Tailoring centre. The centres were inaugurated by Shri Jyotirmoy Chakraborty,
ADG,P Vigilance in presence of Shri Ranjan Sarma, I G Prisons; Moni Baruah, DG
of Prisons; Shri Bhupen Das, Jail Supritendent, Shri Tarun Talukdar, AIG
Prisons, Shri Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor, USTM; Prof Alaka Sarma, Dean Students
Welfare, USTM, the delegates of Kasturba Ashram and the members of an NGO,
“Women for Women”.
Instructions will be imparted thrice a week for 3 months and at the end of
training successful candidates will be awarded with a certificate. Along with
the technical training, Gandhian thoughts will be discussed during the training
program. The inmates will be encouraged to use “Bapuji” Library.
“It is an initiative which was planned by USTM long back and we are very pleased
to materialise this nobel project”, said the Chancellor of USTM Shri Mahbubul
Hoque, while expressing his delight during the launching of the centre. If more
voluntary organizations will come forward to assist the university we will open
more skill training centres in other districts as well, he further added.
The Chief Guest of the program, I G Prisons, Shri Ranjan Sarma said that they
are grateful and pleased by the initiative taken by USTM and in future more such
jail inmates from other prison will be included under this training program so
that more people can take benefit out of it.
