World AIDS Day observed at USTM
To observe the World AIDS Day under the theme
“Hands up for HIV Prevention”, University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya has
organized a Talk where renowned social activist Ms Jahnabi Goswami, the founder
of Assam Network of Positive People (ANPP) was present as a guest of Honor,
today here at techno city USTM. To mark the day and to extend appreciation to
her 25 years of long struggle against HIV/ AIDS, the entire USTM family has
felicitated Ms Jahnabi Goswami on the very occasion.
The campaign under the theme ““Hands up for HIV Prevention “looks at ways to
improve prevention strategies, identifying key areas among specific groups of
people who are vulnerable to transmission – adolescent girls and young women in
particular. Ms Jahanbi Goswami who is working on this focus areas said that
there are more than six thousand women living with HIV/AIDS in Assam and the
numbers are increasing with each passing day. She expressed her regret saying
that we are unable to protect people from becoming the victim of this disease
because of our ignorance and neglect prevailing in the society among the common
people. The age group which is more vulnerable to this epidemic is between 18 to
25 years, who are young people, she added. Ms Goswami also said that the
discrimination, hatred and rejection from the society are making the situation
more difficult to combat the disease. Mostly the people who are living with the
disease are not in a position to afford the medicines which are very expensive,
she also urged the students to be loving, supportive and respectful towards the
HIV/AIDS victims and educate others about the deadly virus. Ms Jahnabi Goswami
who herself is a HIV positive shared her struggle and experiences of last 25
years in fighting the disease and helping the society.
“No students will leave the campus before getting awareness of this deadly
disease”, said Dr P G Rao Vice Chancellor USTM, who urged the faculty members to
make a plan for special classes so that students can be educated about HIV/AIDS
and they can help others to know about the disease.
The Principal Advisor of ERD Foundation, Prof N K Choudhury, Prof Amarjyoti
Choudhury, CV Raman Chair Professor, USTM, faculty members and the students were
present during the event.
